I went to a neighborhood association meeting last night, and city council candidates came and campaigned to a dozen people. A developer presented plans for a new building for comment, and afterwards we went out to to sushi and I met the people who run the group.

And now I have a $50 bet about the birthday of my landlord (he said Virgo. I said anything else. So it’s the stars. vs. probability on this one).

Jersey City is not New York City. And yet I still have a 7 minute train ride into the city.

“For three years and more Beltway politics has been all about the deficit. Urgent action was needed to avert crisis. A Grand Bargain absolutely had to be reached. Fix the Debt, now now now! So where are the celebrations now that the debt issue looks, if not solved, at least greatly mitigated? And it’s not just recovering revenues: health costs, the biggest driver of long-run spending, have slowed dramatically. What we’re getting from the deficit scolds, however, are at best grudging admissions that things may look a bit less dire — if not expressions of regret that the public seems insufficiently alarmed. Jamelle Bouie gets at a large part of it by noting what was obvious all along: for many deficit scolds, it was never really about the debt, it was about using deficits as a way to attack the social safety net. Deficits may have come down, but not the way they were supposed to — hey, we were supposed to be kicking 65 and 66 year-olds off Medicare, not doing something so goody-goody as managing costs better. There is, however, a secondary factor: think about the personal career incentives of the professional deficit scolds. You’re Bowles/Simpson, with a lucrative and ego-satisfying business of going around the country delivering ominous talks about The Deficit; you’re an employee of one of the many Pete Peterson front groups; and now, all of a sudden, the deficit is receding, and you had nothing to do with it. It’s a disaster! And so the deficit progress must be minimized and bad-mouthed.”

Art vs Marketing 2013

One of my contributions to the “Data” issue of 24MAG.

As the theme was “data,” I actually have quite a lot to say about how data can influence the trajectory of art and media—especially as someone who has worked for very metric-heavy environments.

When you work data-first instead of story/message first…some really kooky nonsense can occur. Just because the “data” says something doesn’t mean you have to automatically go with that flow.

Ex: A (scary) portion of people believe in creationism. I am not going to say “well, I can’t work on anything regarding science because we’ll lose that audience.”

Sometimes as a media creator, when you are in the position to do so it is up to you to do that right thing and stand your ground. People respond to media sometimes very unconsciously, and that media becomes part of the cultural language. Be careful what you’re sending back into the culture, and what you’re reflecting.

Those folded pieces of paper are how we plan magazine layouts. It’s gonna be awesome.

#24mag - I need help!

So we’re starting the magazine. I’m writing about an imaginary website that harmonizes first all data from scientific studies, and then all of science. Eventually this website figures out how to synthesize a single account of all of science into one single theory.

I will need YOUR help. Especially if you’re working on the theory of knowledge, the nature of truth, longitudinal studies, and, well, maybe if you do natural language…… I will need help to make sure that most of the theoretical advances I’m talking about are at least a little bit plausible.

I’m tempted to write this whole piece on Github, but it turns out I have a deadline. :-)

So - follow #24mag on twitter for lots of good stuff, and if you have relevant expertise or want to chip in, HELP ME! I’m totally gonna need it!
